If you could help the planet, your community, your yard, and your budget by doing just one thing, would you? Come out to Leesylvania State Park for the answer!
“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water. “
–Loren Eiseley, The Immense Journey, 1957
On Tuesday June 14th Clean Virginia Waterways is offering you the chance to do just that! We will be building rain barrels that can be installed at the bottoms of your house’s downspouts to catch the water that runs off your roof when it rains. During a rainstorm your roof collects and discards hundreds of gallons of water! When that water from your downspouts rushes to join the nearest stream or river very little of it is able to absorb in to the ground. Instead, that rushing water carries away soil, fertilizers, pesticides, and litter that will kill wildlife and poison water all the way out to the ocean. The simple act of catching rainwater and using it for your outdoor chores can prevent the erosion of land, the pollution of rivers, and preserves the fresh water we all need. Imagine the money you could save by catching that water and using it in place of turning on your hose or irrigation system whenever the plants need to be watered or your car needs to be washed.
For less than the cost of a rain barrel at a garden center you will get a hands-on course that will teach you how to create your own rain barrels. At the end of the workshop you will leave with a rain barrel that you created. You can even take the barrel home and get the kids interested in water conservation by letting them help you decorate the barrel. For those who wish to spread the word of water conservation in their communities there will be an additional 30-minute presentation at the end of the program that will teach you how to host your own workshop.
