One day last summer, on a whim, my son and I brought our tent so we could swim and search for fossils until sundown then not be concerned about the 1.5 hour drive home.He enjoyed swimming in the river and bringing up smoothed clay deposits that were being battered about and I enjoyed finding several sharks teeth from the Miocene Era.We stayed until about sundown then returned to the campground to set up our tent.
Earlier in the year we stayed with the Cub Scouts. I planned theweekend campout for the pack and couldn't have asked for a better experience. There were several fields for us to play ultimate, plenty of trails to practice orienteering, and the fishing derby we heldon the Potomac was without equal.Everyone, from four-year old family members to adultshad no problems catching fish off the pier. Some families even enjoyed the swimming pool while others had no problemscooling off in theriver while we looked for fossils.
Before the outing some members of the pack built screen sifters to assist with finding sharks teeth; this park offers the epitome of the ideals of scouting. The boys built a simple tool they could then use to find 300 million-year-old fossils. We used the park handout to identify the prehistoric animal the fossils came from. Westmoreland offers excellent geographical diversity.During previous trips we have really enjoyed the boardwalk that bisects the swamp, its observation tower, and we have also had great times lazily cruising around in a paddle boat.
