Visitor safety is always a priority at Naval Air Station Oceana.
As part of the event, I was able to watch a ceremony where 12 sailors received promotions to various levels of Petty Officer. It was an honor to witness this event and see the pride shining in the faces of these fine men and women.
It felt great to be able to share the news that free parking and admission to veterans and our military from Memorial Day through the end of 2011.
Virginia State Park presentation to navy personnel at Naval Air Station Oceana
The Navy is adamant about promoting safety, not just on the base, but in the sailors personal lives. The commander promoted the idea of "situational awareness" which means taking a moment to assessthe various situations you find yourself in throughout the day. I recommend you apply this idea of "situational awareness" to your holiday plans this weekend. We want you to have a great timeat our parks.
During the presentation about 75th anniversary, I reiterated some very important safety information that we sometimes overlook because we are having so much fun outdoors.
*Don't go hiking in flip-flops. Wear closed toe shoes to protect your feet from snake and insect bites.
*Don't go in the water unless you know how to swim. Sounds like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at how many non-swimmers wade into the water to cool off and find themselves in trouble.
*Wear insect repellant and sunscreen. Nothing spoils a great outdoorvacation like a blistering sunburn coupled with itchy bug bites.
Of course, there are many more safety tips, but if you concentrate on these three, I think you'll find your vacation much more enjoyable. We look forward to seeing you this Memorial Weekend and throughout the year at your Virginia State Parks!
