Generally I write about state parks across the country. But, local parks are important assets of their communities and provide a variety of outdoor recreation to local residents on a daily basis.
Today I am happy to tell you that thanks to a grass roots effort, the PetSafe announced that Lynchburg was one of only fifteen finalists and the only finalist in Virginia.
Now the pressure is on – a popular vote conducted on Pet safe's website and Facebook page will determine the winner. As of this writing, Lynchburg is number 2. People can vote twice a day – once on each site. Voting ends August 3, 2011.

If you aren't a dog owner you might not know why dog parks are important. They provide space for dogs to exercise and interact socially. Studies show that this reduces the incidence of problematic behavior and improves health— not only making for happier animals, but reducing the economic burden associated with unhealthy and unruly dogs.
As with all parks, the community benefits economically since cities and towns with quality local parks attract new residents. Dog parks may be a niche park but with many families traveling with Fido on vacation (since Fido is part of the family), a dog park can be a Tourism draw.
Best yet, dog parks encourage dog owners to get out an exercise instead of just making a quick walk with their pets for bathroom breaks.
As part of the contest, Lynchburg had to make a two minute video to show what this dog park will mean to the community.
