One thing I love more than working with Wilderness Road State Park is a real jewel of Southwest Virginia.
The introduction film and the visitor center are first rate. The staff is amazing and the park is beautiful.
The thing that impressed me the most was the replica of Martin’s Station, a colonial frontier fort that was on the site in 1775, and the very knowledgeable staff. The authentic looking structure and the impressive interpretive staff transports you back into another time. While the interpreters were talking about the building and the station I forgot I was in the 21st Century and not the 1700’s!
I had a distinct impression of what life must have been like for the people of that time. The struggles they faced just to live, survive and thrive. The intelligence and resourcefulness of those early settlers had to be incredible. Just the time and energy it took to have a meal was more than many of us could handle now.
The trip out from the Northern Neck was a long one, but well worth it. I plan to go back as soon as I can. I would love to attend a very special event coming up, The Raid on Martin’s Station which takes place May 13th through 15th.
If you love history like I do, this is the place you! Even if your not a history buff, Wilderness Road State Park may inspire you! There are many other wonderful things at the park for everyone to enjoy.
