DCR's Kelly McClary Honored as Engineer of the Year

The DCR’s Director of Design and Construction Kelly McClary.

Ms. Langelotti in her prepared remarks credited Kelly with overseeing state park construction during one of the largest expansion programs in state park history. She cited the new state park “revenue producing cabins” and “LEED Certified Visitor Centers” (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – a program of the U. S. Green Building Council) as examples of engineering and construction excellence.

Kelly shared the spotlight with her staff as she accepted the award. Her acceptance remarks follow:

Thank you so much. Over the years, I have worked with many of you in this room and it is a tremendous honor to be recognized for this award. As this group knows, completing the design and construction of any new facility takes many people. This award would not be possible without my extremely hard working staff that together last year spent over $34 million dollars in designing and constructing cabins, campgrounds and visitor centers for public use throughout the Commonwealth. I also want to thank many of you in this room that also played a role in that accomplishment. Engineering is a team effort and there is no one person that could do it alone.

Our goal has always been to provide quality structures and recreation areas for public use. In the past few years, we have implemented LEED standards into our new visitor centers. Our goal at the time was to achieve the “certified” level of LEED. Together we surpassed that goal with 2 Silver awards, 2 certified awards and 1 Gold award so far. I am really excited to take part in the future design of our state parks and I very thankful to the Richmond Joint Engineers Council for recognizing our efforts with this award.

A six bedroom cabin at Natural Tunnel opened October 1, 2011 and is representative of the seventeen six bedroom cabins constructed at eight of Virginia’s state parks.

Front and back decks on the six bedroom cabins and L-shaped decks on the two and three bedroom cabins welcome guests to sit and enjoy the view.

Open floor plans make the six bedroom cabins perfect for family gatherings or executive retreats.

New cabins included ADA accessible designs like this one at Natural Tunnel State Park.

Environmentally friendly visitor centers received LEED awards like this one at Westmoreland State Park that received the LEEDGold award.
