The Friends of Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park (FoSCBSP) actively participates in the Virginia State Parks mission to conserve natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the commonwealth and to provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with good stewardship of these lands, water and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations. You too can become involved.
You can earn benefits for your volunteer work. For example, you can earn free passes, free camping, and free cabin use at all Virginia State Parks. The ultimate benefit you can earn is a lifetime entrance pass to all Virginia State Parks along with the satisfaction of contributing to a great local resource.
One of Virginia’s numerous historical sites, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield is named for the civil war battle which took place on April 6, 1865. An immediate precursor to the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox Courthouse, it was the last major defeat of the Confederate Army. The park is adorned by remnants from that day, with battery placements, relics and the field hospital used to treat thousands of wounded. Period costumed interpreters commemorate the event and conduct other living history events throughout the year. Special tours are available with prior notice. The park has three short hiking trails, including one to a battlefield memorial. Motorists who are continuing on to Appomattox can take place in the Lee’s Retreat Driving Tour, which follows the route of his army from Petersburg to Appomattox Court House. While on the trail, drivers can set the radio to AM 1610 for battle details and descriptions.
Opportunities will continue to arise to support the park in a variety of ways. One of those ways is through the Friends group. Friends groups are non-profit organizations that are formed to support a local park through volunteerism, advocacy and fundraising efforts. Anyone interested in becoming involved with Friends of Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park, please call or e-mail and ask for information on joining and annual membership dues/donations. Dues and Donations are Tax Deductible.
