Winter is here but at Bear Creek Lake State Park in central Virginia we are beginning to make plans for the 2011 summer season. Virginia State Parks are the perfect first time job opportunity for youth or a great place to “get your foot in the door” for a permanent position. Positions available during the summer season include Lifeguards, Maintenance, Housekeepers, Snack Bar Workers, a Park Naturalist and Administrative positions. Internships are also available. What better way to spend the summer than learning new skills, obtaining experience in public speaking, making new friends and most importantly creating a work ethic that will last a lifetime. Visit your local Virginia State Park and inquire about seasonal employment opportunities.
The following is an excerpt from Jordan E. Keller’s experience working as an Administrative and Office Specialist since 2006 “Bear Creek Lake State Park has been a part of my back yard all the while that I have lived in Cumberland County. Born and raised in such a small community, this park has helped mold me not only professionally, but also has helped me create a new appreciation for the outdoors and all that nature has to offer us. I have been a part of Bear Creek Lake State Park’s staff since May of 2006 working as an Administrative and Office Specialist. The majority of my time spent working here has been tending to the busy summer season. Sometimes I ask myself just how many individuals I’ve come in contact with and how many of those individuals shared a story with me about their time here. I have the pleasure of just a short five minute commute to work and find myself from time to time visiting after hours to enjoy what my backyard has to offer.”
Many families such as the Keller’s have a long standing tradition of working for Virginia State Parks. Since 1965 Bear Creek Lake has employed several members of Jordan’s immediate family including Grandmother Martha Keller, who was employed at the park from 1965 to 1986, and Jordan’s dad, uncle, and a cousin also worked many seasons at “the lake”. Currently Jordan’s sister Madison is also employed at the park. In all, the Keller family has a current combined total of 47 years of service at Bear Creek Lake State Park! Thank you, Keller family, for your many years of dedicated service.
