On Saturday, March 12, the morning calm was broken by the rhythmic slapping of oars on water. Within minutes, the sound multiplied as more and more boats took to the water. One glance and it was clear that these were not just casual fishermen. The women’s rowing teams from the Hungry Mother State Park for a pre-season scrimmage.
The two teams made several circuits of Hungry Mother Lake during the morning’s events. Spectators crowded the shoreline to watch the unique sport. Alumni sported the colors of their favorite team, and cheers could be heard as the rowers raced past.
The two teams were on their way home from spring break training in Tennessee. The coaches, long-time friends, wanted a place to meet and scrimmage. Hungry Mother State Park met all their needs: open water, cabins, and restaurant service. This was the fifth year that the teams stayed at Hungry Mother State Park.
