After three months of cold weather, it is time to start airing out that tent, popup or RV to get ready for the official start of camping season in Virginia State Parks.
Campers that don’t let a little cold weather get to them are likely aware that full service camping is available now at Douthat, Shenandoah River, and Hungry Mother state parks as well as in all our primitive campgrounds with the exception of Caledon.
Camping will open March 1 at Pocahontas, Smith Mountain, and Staunton River state parks.
Camping will open March 6 at all other parks with campgrounds with two exceptions. Fairy Stone and Twin Lakes will have delayed openings as bathhouse renovations are completed. Campgrounds at these locations are scheduled to reopen May 1. The equestrian campground and group campground at Fairy Stone will open March 6.
Grayson Highlands State Park opens primitive camping March 6 and full service camping May 1. Their opening is delayed annually due to weather conditions at their altitude.
