Douthat State Park had the privilege of hosting in-service training for the law enforcement park employees three separate times between the months of January to March.
Law Enforcement In-Service at Douthat State Park
In-service training is merely further education for employees to help develop their skills in a specific discipline or occupation. In this instance in-service was held for the law enforcement staff at Virginia State Parks.
I took the opportunity to shadow several of the instructors at Douthat for the week. I took pictures, videoed, took notes, and observed sections of the training.
In-service lasted for four days with class starting on Monday. Each day was held at a different venue with a different training.
Monday, the first day I showed up, was broken into three sections of training to reinforce their skills. I was able to observe one of the instructors demonstrate proper vehicle maneuvering. This was a great opportunity to see how a law enforcement officer properly handles a vehicle with due regard for the safety of the public as well as the officer.
The instructor demonstrated proper driving techniques while avoiding all road hazards or otherwise known as traffic cones. He showed the basic fundamentals to safely control his vehicle at all times.
The knowledge gained along with the techniques and skills learned during this first day of training helps the law enforcement officer read the road, plan ahead, and continue to safely operate a law enforcement vehicle while performing law enforcement-specific tasks.
Virginia State Parks is state accredited law enforcement agency.
