Wilderness Road State Park will present a special program, The Cherokee Campaign, on Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14.
This program will be a prelude to one of the park’s more popular summer evening programs, Alarm at Martin’s Station, which features a Cherokee attack on the fort.
Activities begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. consisting of tours of blacksmithing, hide tanning, artillery firing, and musket firing. A special program at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. will detail the political and social environment surrounding the western frontier settlements during the summer of 1776.
With the Revolutionary War under way, and the sycamore Shoals Treaty complete, the Virginian’s, North Carolinian’s, Cherokee, Shawnee, and British are all choosing enemies and allies. This compilation of events, followed by a cultural power struggle, leads to the 1776 Cherokee War. In addition to these activities the Powder Horn Gift Shop will be open and the 20-minute high definition film “Wilderness Road, Spirit of a Nation” will be playing in the Visitors Center theatre.
The special evening program kicks off at 8:30 p.m. as an attack on Martin’s outpost is imminent. Watch as Martin and his men prepare for a night of danger as a hostile war party approaches from the west. Will you stand with Captain Martin in defending hearth and home?
This program is free of charge, but parking rates do apply. For more information, please call 276-445-3065 or email us at [email protected].
