The pier lights at Kiptopeke State Park are on and fishermen are lining up waiting for the fish to arrive. Water temperature in the Chesapeake Bay is still a little too cool for many fish species – it's 53 degrees; however, this cool water is great for Tautog fisherman. Tautogs have been good off the concrete ships all week with a number of 17-20 inch fish being caught.
Warmer temperatures this week should push water temperatures into the higher 50 and bring flounder and small stripers into the bay and pier. As the flounder move into the bay and around the fishing pier, remember that early in the season they prefer minnows over squid and other baits.
