Our featured Park of the Month for September is Kiptopeke State Park, site of the Eastern Shore Birding and Wildlife Festival that will take place here September 17-20, 2009. The Festival is one of the best bird watching festivals on the East Coast, and guests have the opportunity to view dozens of North American bird species as they migrate south along the Atlantic coast during their annual fall migration. In addition to bird watching, enjoy workshops, children’s programs, expert speakers, boat tours, exhibits, and other educational activities. This interesting and fun extended weekend is sponsored by the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce.
Kiptopeke is located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore a few miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It has extensive camping opportunities as well as indoor lodging, plus a special camping opportunity in the unique yurt, a wooden structure that is a cross between a cabin and a tent.
In addition to camping, Kiptopeke has just about everything a weekend warrior could ask for including biking, picnicking, and hiking for the land lubber, or boating, swimming, and fishing for the seafaring type who will enjoy the Waterfront Recreation Complex.
A visit to Kiptopeke State Park is a must for all bird watchers. For more information about the park, visit the DCR Virginia State Parks at http://www.esvachamber.org/ or call 757) 331-2267.
