September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. Seventeen individuals came out to help us clean our coves by canoe. By removing storm debris and trash they’ve helped conserve vital habitat and enhance the view shed of our shorelines for the thousands of visitors to Smith Mountain Lake annually.
Lunch was served to participants after a fruitful morning on the water. “Everyone really got into it, it almost became a competition between a couple of our younger participants.” according to Kelsey Kennedy. “They looked so proud of each item they snagged & got into a boat.” Kelsey is an AmeriCorps Member who is volunteering her summer in the interpretive department of Smith Mountain Lake State Park. She is gaining practical work experience she hopes to carry with her throughout her career.
