I am a big fan of Les Stroud and his Survivorman series on Discovery Science. Ilook forward to each of his adventures around the globe. If you are not familiar with this series, Les gets “stranded” in a wilderness location with not much more than the clothes on his back and his cameras. Generally there is a scenario that suggests how easy it would be to get yourself in a fix like that and Les will have a bicycle, broken down vehicle, or even a hot air baloon to MacGyver some gear (I know, I’m mixing my shows now).
At any rate, Les survives in the wilderness area alone without food and water for seven days. He isn’t always successful at getting small game or fish, but he usually can survive on bugs and vegetation.
For fans of this show or folks who would just like to learn more about Wilderness Survival, Wilderness Survival Adventures on Sunday, April 26th. You will learn to use native plants for food, shelter, tools, and medicine. Discover essential techniques to survive being lost in the wilderness, from building shelters to starting a fire without matches. Fal]e Cape is the perfect venue for this program since it is pretty much wilderness in spite of its Virginia Beach location.
The program runs from 2-5 p.m. and reservations are required. Meet at Little Island City Park for transportation into False Cape State Park. Call (757)426-7128 to sign up or for more information. The program is only $10 per person.
