Before you visit your next Virginia State Park, come prepared. Visit our website and the page for the park of your choice (like Chippokes). Download the park map. Some of our parks with very large trail systems have a separate map just for the trails. In that case, download both.
You can also skip that step, and go right to the Virginia State Parks Information Station. In fact, even if you print the park guide, you still want to visit the Information Station because it offers more detailed trail information. Major trails offer a video as well as a detailed map you can print. There are also GPS way points. Whether you intend to hike a little or a lot, every park has a great trail experience.
College Run Trail is my favorite. It links the Visitor Center to the historic area of the park, meandering along the James River and reaching the River House, Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum, and the Jones-Stewart Mansion.
At Chippokes Plantation State Park, the Information Station is located at the visitor center, at the far left of the building under the roof line.
