We all secretly knew that marshmallows, that sweet sticky confectionery had some sort of origins in a plant somewhere, as most things do. We often wondered, but not too hard, about the history of the marshmallow. We usually just light them on fire and stuff them between graham crackers and chocolate and eat them with a smile!

Typically the subject comes up as we are at our favorite Virginia State Park, where the family has them burning ablaze on the end of a sharp stick around a campfire ready to shove them between two graham crackers and a piece of Hershey's chocolate bar then pop them into our mouths, hair and elbows (not sure how that happens, they somehow end up on our elbows.) But wait, there is more to this story…
According toBRFAL Chapter) the marshmallow was indeed a plant, and grew not too far from us here in Virginia. It is a mallow plant that grows in marshes, indigenous to Africa.
