The Friends of Belle Isle State Park (FoBISP) actively participates in the Virginia State Parks mission to conserve natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the commonwealth and to provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with good stewardship of these lands, water and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations. You too can become involved.
You can earn benefits for your volunteer work. For example, you can earn free passes, free camping, and free cabin use at all Virginia State Parks. The ultimate benefit you can earn is a lifetime entrance pass to all Virginia State Parks along with the satisfaction of contributing to a great local resource.
Belle Isle State Park rests on the mouth of the Rappahannock River in Lancaster County. This 733 acre park was purchased to help preserve the natural beauty and wildlife of the local tidal region and wetlands. Not only does the park boarder over 7 miles of the Rappahannock River, but also Deep and Mulberry creeks. The diverse habitats found in the park provide homes to many predator birds, such as blue herons, osprey, hawks and bald eagles. White-tailed deer, turkeys, groundhogs, rabbits, squirrels, moles, reptiles and amphibians are also common. There are eight distinct types of wetlands within the park. These diverse ecosystems make Belle Isle an excellent outdoor laboratory for environmental education. The park contains guest houses, a historical mansion often coveted for weddings and receptions, campgrounds, multi-use trails, fishing, environmental education programs, gift shop, picnic shelter and concessions for renting fishing equipment, canoes, kayaks, and bicycles.
Opportunities will continue to arise to support the park in a variety of ways. One of those ways is through the Friends group. Friends groups are non-profit organizations that are formed to support a local park through volunteerism, advocacy and fundraising efforts. Anyone interested in becoming involved with Friends of Belle Isle State Park, please call or e-mail and ask for information on joining and annual membership dues/donations. Dues and Donations are Tax Deductible.
