The Friends of York River State Park held their first Annual Fishing Tournament at Croaker Landing in the State Park from 6 A.M. to 4 P.M. on 9 May 2009. Entrants paid a fee of $20.00 to benefit the children’s playground equipment project being funded by the Friends of York River State Park. The Friends group has already donated $12,000 for swing sets in the park in 2009. A second fund raising event is planned for this summer.
Entrants could place six of their largest Croaker, by weight, into competition for prizes. The $200 prize for first place went to Robert Rogers with 10.25 pounds. Second place winner Donald Shaw, was awarded an Annual Parking/Boat Launch Pass good for all state parks with a weight of 10lbs. The third place winner, Anthony Fulton, won an Okuma Elite Glass Spinning Combo Fish Rod donated by Hooker Bait and Tackle with a weight of 9lbs. A total of 11 valuable prizes were awarded to the lucky fishermen.
