The new season has begun and thanks to knowledgeable staff and our co-workers at Douthat, we are ready and eager to serve our guests this summer and all year long!
Seasonal, year-round interpretive staff and ourDouthat State Parkfor a week of intensive training, hands-on practice, and fellowship the week before Memorial Day weekend. We were inspired by the words of and presentation by our State Parks Director, Joe Elton. Staff from across the state led us in a variety of workshops and behind the scenes duties such as advertising and record keeping, which are just as vital to enjoyable experiences as talking about wildlife and storytelling.

Preparing Virginia State Parks for a full season of events!
Training with you in mind for a summer full of fun at Virginia State Parks!
Campfire programs, hiking trips, advertising events, public speaking; park interpreters seem to handle these task effortlessly, some may even have a talent for these facets of the job. As with any profession, even the most talented still need training to be more effective.
First year seasonal staff and AmeriCorps volunteers broke off into small groups, planned, and presented park activities.Year-round staff were trained in the State Park's "Your Backyard Classroom" program where they will teach educators how to lead nature programs. All presentations were evaluated by more experienced rangers and program coordinators.
