Two different volunteer groups will be spending a week of their time at Douthat State Park working on a variety of volunteer projects.
A group of 11 volunteers from the American Hiking Society will be traveling from several different states to work from Monday, March 8 to Sunday, March 14.
Douthat State Park teamed up with a national organization, the American Hiking Society, to find volunteers for the park during a week in March. When a representative from the American Hiking Society offered Douthat the opportunity to host a group of volunteers the park jumped on the opportunity.
The next week a group of college students from Clarkson University in New York will be traveling to Douthat State Park on Saturday, March 13 to Friday, March 19, to volunteer for a week as an alternative spring break vacation.
A trip to the beach or manual labor doing trail work? This is the choice these 10 college students made for their spring break this year.
“Volunteers in this age group willing to give up their spring break in order to perform public service projects will hold a bright future,” said Douthat State Park Manager Charlie Conner.
Both sets of volunteers will have a brief orientation and then hit the trails to start work. Their week will consist of a variety of trail repairs which include: surface erosion, re-establishment of water crossings, foot-bridge construction, trail route definition, installation of trail signs and trail marking.
“We’re really looking forward to having not only one, but two groups of volunteers come to the park and help our staff with various projects,” said Conner.
