First Landing State Park, through a partnership with the Armed Services YMCA and the military’s MWR program, is hosting two weeks of Junior Ranger camps for children of military service members. Many of these children live in base housing and have few opportunities to immerse themselves in nature-oriented play and outdoor recreation.
Fortunately, with funding from Sierra Club, we are able to offer Junior Ranger programs for 200 children over a two-week period—July 27-August 7. The children will take hikes, do nature oriented crafts, participate in aquatic and marine life programs as well as have a Junior Ranger graduation ceremony. The funding from Sierra Club is providing materials for the programs…such as backpacks, binoculars, compasses, and craft kits for the program.
We need 16 volunteers each day for 10 days to help with the programs. Shifts are 8am-12noon and 12noon to 4pm Monday through Friday from July 27 through August 7. (Volunteers can work more than one shift.) For volunteer information please call Pam Kern at 757-412-2308 or email her at [email protected]. (A special shout out to Ann for volunteering for the whole two weeks!)
We also need donations of healthy individually wrapped snacks—granola bars, pretzels, juice boxes, etc. If you know of a company that might be willing to help please email [email protected].
Please think about giving just four hours of your time to this great program.
