August is the month of muggy mornings and soggy nights.
Your family’s plum swum out and getting restless inside and you’re worn-out from the yard work triumvirate of mow & water & weed. Pretty soon the buzzing of the bees will turn into the homeroom bells that toll the somber news that the end of summer is here.
Sure, you could sit around in the A/C, burning up your electricity and deep frying up what’s left of your wallet; or you can get outside and burn off a few of those Fourth of July calories. What better way to break free from the doldrums of the season than to visit one of our great Virginia State Parks?
AtTwin Lakes State Park we're dedicated to providing you the perfect opportunity to escape, relax, and explore nature, and today we are offering a crash course on Geocaching.
Geocaching combines technology and nature
Geocaching is a high-tech twist on treasure hunting. With the aid of twenty-seven satellites overhead (communicating with either a GPS handheld unit or a GPS-enabled smart phone), geocachers search for little plastic containers, known as geocaches (or caches) hidden in the woods. Geocaches typically contain something free to take and a little journal to leave a note for future geocachers. (Note: Proper Geocaching etiquette suggests that if you take something you should leave something, so bring along something small to share with others.)
Geocaching at Twin Lakes State Park is full of fun surprises!
We recently updated our geocaches atVirginia State Parks is featuring the Birding Adventure series. Each park will have a themed cache containing information about a unique bird often found at its location. Our featured bird is the American Goldfinch.
If you think Geocaching would be fun but would like further instruction before diving in solo, we offer a beginner-level course during the summer season as a part of our Interpretive Programming. During this class, we will teach you the basics of the game, including how to use a provided GPS unit to find your very first geocache.Click here to find out when our next Geocaching 101 program will be held as well as other educational events. e will also set up the geocaching course for school groups, scout troops, and other groups upon request.
