Another part in this series where I actually name names! By that I mean I am sharing a specific cabin at a specific park. It was super helpful for me as a state park goer to know the specifics. I booked those cabins, just as I booked this one, I don't want you to miss out on these great cabins and insight from someone who has actually stayed in this river view cabin at James River State Park and plan to stay there again in the future!

Cabin location

The cabins are perched on a short bluff overlooking the James River, so almost all of them have fantastic views! This is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, so amazing scenery and wildlife abound.

These are the newer style vaulted ceilings, pretty pine woodwork cabins, with wood burning fireplaces and all amenities. Cabin 14 is two bedroom (master bedroom with a queen bed and the kids bedroom with two sets of bunk beds), one bathroom, large kitchen and family room. Central heat and A/C. Pots and pans, first set of linens and even firewood is provided!

Near the cabins

There is a ton of space outside the cabin to ride bikes, kick the ball and run around. For our cabin, there was a picnic table on the deck and also across the road with firepit for roasting hotdogs and s'mores. You can walk to the ponds, the river, and the trails from the cabins (no need to drive).

There is a canoe/kayak/tubing livery at this park

This means you can rent one of these and ride 6 or 8 or just 2 miles down the James and they will shuttle you back! If you bring your own kayak you can pay a fee and be shuttled back as well. Hiking trails

The park has 15 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking and bridle use. Tye River Overlook, Green Hill Pond Trail and the fishing pier are wheelchair-accessible. Click here to learn more about the trails.

Hint #1: There is a propane barbeque grill on the deck, a great place to cook bacon and eggs and make the neighbors in three counties drool!

Hint #2: Learn about Hurricane Camille when you do the Tye River Overlook Hike (and why this place made the history books!)

Hint #3: Be the early bird and get the worm! By that I mean sleeping in is fine and dandy, but waking up after a light rain and seeing the clouds lift as the sun rises is magnificent! Take it all in from the covered porch with a cup a joe in hand.

Hint #4: Leave your blinds open from the master bedroom and you will see the trains at night as they come round the other side of the river illuminating the hillside, it is spectacular!

GENERAL INFO:James River State Park offers more than 1,500 acres of rolling farm meadows and three miles of river frontage. Facilities include cabins and lodges, primitive and water and electric campsites, primitive and water and electric horse campsites, and group camping. Thirteen primitive campsites are by the river and offer opportunities to canoe-in camp. There are 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Green Hill Pond Trail and the Tye River Overlook are wheelchair-accessible. Three fishing ponds and boating access to 12 miles of the James River make the park ideal for anglers. There are seven picnic areas in the park and six picnic shelters that offer beautiful views of the surrounding hills. There is limited wireless Verizon service in the cabin and day-use areas.

The park offers opportunities to see wildlife and explore habitat native to the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Whether floating, fishing or hiking, you can enjoy breathtaking views found only at James River State Park.
