On Saturday, March 5, 2011, as the sounds of songbirds began to fill the air, Bear Creek Lake State Park hosted its second annual bluebird house building workshop.
Nearly 50 participants and volunteers were on hand to learn a little about the life of a bluebird, and to put together 28 kits made by Richard Stoner, whose wife Janet is a member of the Virginia Master Naturalists Central Piedmont chapter.
The workshop was sponsored and directed by the VMN Central Piedmont chapter and the Cartersville Garden Club, who provided delicious baked goods for the participants. As well as building the houses, participants were given instructions on the importance of predator guards and how to properly install a safe bluebird abode, courtesy of the Virginia Bluebird Society website.
This family fun event will no doubt be a regular spring offering of the Park. Watch this website and the Virginia State Parks weekly electronic newsletter for information on our Winter Songbird Roost building workshop to be held in the fall.
