GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT AT HUNGRY MOTHER STATE PARK
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 19
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 19
Is the winter weather weighing you down? It’s time for a new hobby: bird watching. Winter is a great time to watch birds. Bare branches and bright snow make it easier to see colorful birds as they dart around bushes and trees. Hang a bird feeder in your yard and within days you will have flocks of cheery birds fluttering about. Just a few minutes spent watching our feathered friends will lift your spirits.
You can learn more about the birds of Smyth County at the Great Backyard Bird Count on Saturday, February 19, at Hungry Mother State Park, at 10:00 a.m. till noon. The morning’s program will start at the Discovery Center, but guests should dress to be outside. The program will be held rain or shine. A free program, and open to all ages and skill levels, guests will learn how to be “citizen scientists” and count birds. The program will include a short “how-to” on bird identification for beginners. Field guides and binoculars will be available for use, but guests are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.
