The Park Manager at StauntonRiver State Park said something to me today I had never thought of – how different our park and cabin guests are in the winter verses the rest of the year. Most of the year, our park are peopled.
Families, couples, individuals all flock to parks to participate in outdoor recreation pursuits and to enjoy nature in the summer, and even spring and fall, and there are lots of people around. The winter is for the more solitary or private getaways, okay you could also say romantic. Nature always seems so quiet in the winter. Everything is so still, particularly when there is snow.
We started keeping a few of our cabins open year round about ten years ago. We have generally added a few more cabins each year. This year some of the cabins at Staunton River State Park will be open year round for the first time, and now meaning some cabins at all our parks are open 365 days a year.
You may have seen my posts before that mention my husband’s and my getaway each year in February. I love our parks in the winter when I feel like they are all mine; when you might not see another sole unless you look real hard. Of course, Valentine’s Day is a popular time for romantic getaways. In fact, I suggest you plan now just to be on the safe side since we generally sell out. Any winter weekend will do. Think about a quiet Christmas away from all the commercialism or a special New Years celebration. It doesn’t have to be a special occasion.
I can’t promise the romantic snowfall for your escape to one of our parks. But, the snow is kind of just icing on the cake.
