Visitors to Douthat State Park lined Wilson’s Creek and Douthat’s lake in anticipation for 9 o’clock to drop their fishing lines in the water for Douthat’s first day of fee fishing on Saturday, April 3, 2010.
Families and fishermen gathered at Douthat State Park to enjoy the day of fishing. The Children’s Fishing Area was a popular place to fish on Saturday. Four-year-old Noah Mumbert from Harrisonburg caught a fish in the 9 a.m. hour. Excitedly he reeled his line in and his father Nathaniel Mumbert unhooked the fish. After a little hesitation to touch the fish Noah proudly held it up for a great photo.
This is the families third year coming to Douthat State Park for fee fishing. They made this year a day trip with the five member family.
Eleven-year-old Christopher Snodgrass caught the first fish of the day at the Children’s Fishing Area. He helped his eight-year-old sister Rachael reel in her third big fish of the day later in the morning.
The Snodgrass family is from Roanoke and is staying in White Oak Campground. They have been coming to Douthat State Park for the last seven or eight years at least five times each year.
“We come every year around Easter when the kids are on spring break,” said Emily Snodgrass, mother of Christopher and Rachael. “We love it here. I come down here with my four kids and they always have good luck.”
Fishermen also cast their line out in the middle of the lake with dozens of fishing boats scattered around Douthat’s 50 acre lake.
