High Bridge Trail State Park has opened a six mile section of the trail from Rice’s Depot Road to Burkeville. Completing this section was made possible by a Memorandum of Understand with the Town of Farmville which allowed Farmville’s labor forces to complete the trail surface construction. This brings the total mileage open to 30 miles. High Bridge Trail is a multi-use trail that runs through three counties and five towns in Central Virginia. Its centerpiece is the majestic High Bridge, which is more than 2,400 feet long and 160 feet above the Appomattox River. High Bridge is not open to the public at this time.
“I’m excited to announce that the entire park, with the exception of High Bridge, is now open to the public,” said the park manager, Eric Hougland. “It was in August of 2008 that we opened the first 4 miles of the trail. Here we are about 2 years later and we have 30 miles open. We’ve had great partners in this effort and excellent contractors that have worked hard to get the job done. Next I look forward to the completion of High Bridge.”
Trail visitors can access the trail at Heights School Road near Pamplin, Elam, Prospect, Tuggle, municipal parking in Farmville, Osborne Road, River Road and now at Rice at Rice’s Depot Road. For park map, click here.
