Traveling Players Ensemble tours Virginia bringing theatre into the outdoors, and Douthat State Park is proud to offer guests “Shakespeare in the Park” at the amphitheatre on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. both nights presenting Macbeth.
Macbeth is Shakespeare’s tragedy of ambition, fear and wilderness cooking. The weird sisters’ bewildering predictions incite Macbeth and his wife to seize the Scottish crown and initiate a widening spiral of murder. An elusive dagger, voices melting into the mist, an accusing ghost, a drunken doorman and the famously indelible bloodstains tumble together in a nightmarish struggle to secure the Scottish throne.
“Traveling Players Ensemble is a professional theatre company based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, with the mission to bring great theatre into the great outdoors,” said Jeanne Harrison, producing artistic director for the Traveling Players Ensemble. “Our programs reflect the very origins of theatre, when troupes of actors roamed the ancient and medieval countryside, relying on the barest props and the boldest imagination to convey their art.
Come out and enjoy “Shakespeare in the Park” at Douthat State Park. There is no admission into the performance.
On Sunday, Aug. 2, join the Rev. Gerry Burkholder from Epworth United Methodist Church for a nondenominational worship service at the beach amphitheater starting at 8 a.m.
