The President of the United States wrote in his Veterans Day proclamation 2011:
“As we offer our sincere appreciation and respect to our veterans, to their families, to those who are still in harm’s way, and to those we have laid to rest, let us rededicate ourselves to serving them as well as they have served the United States of America.”
Veterans Day first came to be after World War 1 to remember the fallen soldiers that fought so bravely and made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for this country’s freedom. After World War 2 there was a need to include and remember soldiers from WW2 and also have a day separate from Memorial Day that would include fallen soldiers, veterans, those still in harm’s way and their families. Armistice Day then changed names to Veterans Day, and it has been an important part of the American culture ever since. First Landing State Park wishes to honor our veterans and active duty military personnel by creating care packages for deployed troops. If you want to show your appreciation and contribute to the care packages, stop by our new Trail Center with your supplies!
