Boy Scouts with Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day. The park is registering scouts to come out and volunteer to clean up fallen tree limbs, trash, leaves, and other debris from the park from 10 a.m. until noon. The group will focus mainly on the parking lots, cabin areas, and shelters. Other volunteers, individuals or groups, may also participate and volunteers as well.
All Boy Scouts working the morning will have the opportunity to participate in the American Labor Merit Badge Workshop in the afternoon at 1 p.m. The workshop ties in very closely to the work the scouts will be providing the park as well as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Scouts must be accompanied by a parent or Scout Master at all times. Gloves, rakes, trash bags, and all other equipment will be provided by the park. Anyone interested in participating should contact the park at 540-643-2500 to register. Volunteers should meet at the Beach Parking Lot at 10 a.m.
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College on Wednesday, Jan. 19 to set up an informational booth to talk to local students about the park and about volunteering at the park. Come by the booth for more information.
James River State Park is asking the local community to come out to the park on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and help keep the roadsides free of litter. The park will plan to cleanup Route 605 and Route 606 around the park entrance with the help of volunteers.
