Children ages 6 to 14 will learn how to catch fish at the Youth Fishing Clinic at Smith Mountain Lake State Park sponsored by Bedford County. The Clinic will be June 6, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants will learn to cast, identify fish, how to choose bait and then how to tie it onto a line. Boating safety is also included with the help of Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Department will be on hand for fire boat rides. Fishing tackle and lunch (hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks) will be provided free to participating youth. Lunch for the parents is $3 per person.
Parents are welcome to stay with their child and may also be an assistant group leader. Children are put into age groups so the instructors can talk to children on an appropriate level. The casting contest is also judged by age level. You can register with Bedford County Parks and Recreation by calling 540 586-7682. “Day of” registration will be available to park guests. Registration is limited to the first 200 children and preference is given to Bedford County residents. Out of town park guests are also encouraged to register as space is usually available.
