The YCCcrewsconsist of small groups of youth (ages 14-17 years), each coming fromdifferent areas of the state and from diverse backgrounds.The crews are supervised by individuals entering into their Junior year of collegeor older.The living facilities are provided andclosely supervised by professional park staff and committed adult volunteers. All mealsare provided and the youth receive a $500 program completion stipend at graduation on their final day.
During the day the crews carry out priority environmental projects like trail building and maintenance, invasive species removal, as well as other labor intensive projects. After hours they participate in environmental and cultural programming, tour the local area and enjoy all that the park has to offer in outdoor activities.
The Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corpsprogramcombines work experience, education, and life skillsto enrich the teen’s overall development and work readiness. The program also uses environmental and community serviceto strengthen the stewardship of Virginia’s natural resources. As a result of this program,environmental awareness increases within the community as each person experiences a positivelife changing adventurewithin our very own park.
