9/11 National Day of Remembrance at Virginia State Parks

We invite you to join us on this special day as we remember the tragedy of 9/11 and honor those who lost their lives, lost their loved ones and the emergency service personnel who gave all!

The National Day of Service is also the National Day of Remembrance for 9/11 at Virginia State Parks. Please join us as we as a nation remember and give a little back.

Below is a list of Virginia State Parks Service and Remembrance activities coming up on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, which also touched many Virginians as The Pentagon is in Virginia. All events listed below will take place on Sunday, September 11, 2011.

Shenandoah River:

A 9/11 commemorative tree planting will be held at the Visitor Centerfrom 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in remembrance of the events on September 11, 2001.

Sky Meadows:

An event called Invasive Species Removal Day is planned for communitymembers who are looking for ways to give back. The program will beginat 10:00 a.m. at the Historic Mount Bleak House. All Public Service Officers(Fire Fighters, Police Officers,and Military personnel) and their familieswill get into the park for free with appropriate ID.

Smith Mountain Lake:

AmeriCorps Member Kelsey Kennedy is planning a Cove Clean-upby Canoe program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will ventureout onto the lake by canoe and help clean trash and debris fromthe coves along the park's shoreline. Other volunteer opportunitiesinclude helping at the canoe launch site. This will include loadingand unloading trash from canoes and onto trailers. Other volunteerswill be needed to help prepare lunch for the participants.

Southwest Virginia Museum:

In an effort to recognize the efforts of public servants, the park will be hosting"Grateful Service" on Sunday, September 11 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.The program includes a special visit and remarks by Congressman MorganGriffith, a free concert by Fire in the Kitchen, and free cake and punch on theMuseum's front lawn.

Staunton River:

A trail cleanup day is planned as a commemoration for the remembrance ofthe events on September 11, 2001. The event will assist the recovery effortsresulting from the devastating tornado destroyed much of the park

Staunton River Battlefield:

A park landscaping event will take place as a commemoration of the eventsof September 11, 2001. Volunteers will gather at the Visitor Center flag polefor a service of remembrance.

Twin Lakes:

The Meherrin Volunteer Fire Department will assist with the dedication of a 9/11 Commemorative Plaque to honor the remembrance of theevents on September 11, 2001.

Westmoreland:

Park staff will focus on the cleanup and restoration of the grounds and facilitiescaused by Hurricane Irene.

Wilderness Road:

A "Grateful Service" event will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to honor allpublic servants and their dedication to meeting the public's needs.

York River:

An "Estuaries Day" is planned featuring the celebration of the rich and fertileecosystem where fresh and salt water meet. The program will feature the valueof estuaries and focus on the threat of the human impact on this gift of nature.
