Virginia State Parks have teamed up to provide you opportunities to connect with nature, meet people with like-minded interests, and have a memorable vacation all while working on a week-long trail building project.

The 2014 Alternative Break schedule offerstrips in many Virginia State Parks including, Wilderness Road state parks. Tools, food stipend, and project supervision are included in the registration fee and all trips provide free time to explore the surrounding landscape, hike, or enjoy the cultural offerings of nearby attractions.
Never been hiking or done trail work before? We welcome you! Trips don’t require any prior trail work experience, just a good attitude and a willingness to get a little dirty! American Hiking Society’s Alternative Break program offers you one of the most affordable, fulfilling ways to explore and improve our nation’s recreational trails, while creating memories that will last a lifetime.
