I was one of those little girls that thought snakes, snails, bugs, frogs and beetles were very cool. At a young age I found out that when I picked up one of those creepy crawlies, I could terrorize half the neighborhood, and it gave me the power to make boys twice my size scream like little girls! Of course, I really did like those animals much to my mother chagrin, especially when I brought them in the house for her to see. Usually it resulted in her crying out in another language I did not understand and my father laughing so hard he would cry. To her credit, even though she found some of the critters not so cute, she never curbed my enthusiasm for wild things.
