Hello, Hope here again! On August 6th there was a Hike for the Cause at National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.
Before I return to my magical forest I wanted to recap how the hike went. Leesylvania had help from many volunteers who made this event possible with raising money, spreading the word, registration tables, crafts, and information table. I loved seeing all the pink!
These courageous people journeyed through the picnic area and trails; hiking up and down hills. I loved the symbolism of how our volunteer Cindy Buck-Thompson went through a journey with breast cancer and everyone went on a 4 mile journey here at the Park. Some hiked for honor, for remembrance, and for hope. It sure made me feel all warm and tingly inside.
After the hike we had activities like “mending breast cancer with duct tape” by using pink flamingo duct tape to make awareness ribbons and making pink beaded bracelets. There were little gnome (hee hee!) facts for all to read and educate themselves. When everyone arrived back at the Visitor Center we had a raffle of pink items like: pink jackets, a pink gardening tool kit, pink bracelets, pink water bottles, and much more. There was so much pink I had to squeal.
When in Gnome, do as the Gnomans do!
By the end of the day Leesylvania made $1607 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. I did a little research and discovered that for one uninsured woman to get a mammogram it costs $100. Our hike raised enough money for 16 ladies to get a mammogram! This helps with the mission to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and early detection for those in need.
Chilling with my gnomies: Carrie McCrory, Sarah Phillips, and Genevieve White.
Leesylvania had so much fun that they are going to do it next year on August 11, 2012. Oh, how exciting! Well I’ve got to scamper off and tend to my flowers, hope to see you there next year!
