Volunteers are working on those last minute details for the Eleventh Annual Lake Run Cruise-In and Car Show at Douthat State Park on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17, 2009.
The Douthat State Park Environmental Education Group is working along side Douthat State Park employees to get ready for the car show. The group was formed to provide assistance to the Virginia Division of State Parks for the continued operation and preservation of Douthat State Park. The group volunteers, fund-raises, and provides materials and/or labor for activities and tasks which will enhance the educational and recreational opportunities available to all park users.
Volunteers have been recruited for the day of the show to help lead cars in to the show area and people will be on hand for any questions guests may have. The weekend kicks off on Saturday, May 16 at 3 p.m. with numerous cars cruising in to Douthat State Park. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and relax on the beach while you listen to The Klass Band perform from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The concert is free of charge, and there is free parking to all registered participants for the car show.
Douthat State Park will set up inflatables at the beach for kids to bounce and climb on and food vendors will be set up for dinner. Bring the family to enjoy the evening at Douthat State Park.
Another event taking place on Saturday, May 16 is the Alleghany Highlands Triathlon which ends at Douthat State Park around 5 p.m. For more information on the triathlon, visit http://www.magicinthemountains.org/triathalon.htm.
The actual car show will take place on Sunday, May 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration is held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Douthat State Park Office. Show participants will receive a registration number and a goody bag. The first 175 registered cars will receive a commemorative car show dash plaque.
Automobiles have an option of hitting the rinse station before heading up to the beach area to show their classic car.
Food vendors will be set up for the day and the park will be full of games, the Big Country 101 Prize Wheel, a 50/50 drawing, and music.
It’s not to late to register your vehicle. Advanced registration is $13.00 per vehicle and is due before Saturday, May 16. Registration the day of the show will be $15.00 per vehicle. Visit www.douthatspeed.org for a registration form.
Spectator parking is $3.00 per vehicle and shuttle buses will be available to transport people to and from the show area.
