National Day of Service and RemembranceonSunday, September 11 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
One of the joys of working with an AmeriCorps volunteer at our Park this summer has been the youthful energy, excitement, and creativity our worker has imbued into our summer lineup of programs. This valuable contribution also helped us to define “service” in a new way and to accentuate the service work taking place in our communities every day of the year. When we transferred focus from summer programs to our fall programming schedule and, specifically, our Park’s celebration of the National Day of Service and Remembrance, the rejuvenated definition of service transformed into an event that represents a sincere “thank you” to all of our public servants who work for the betterment of our communities.

The partnership with AmeriCorps—and the corresponding hard work of park staff and our AmeriCorps volunteer, Elizabeth Stapleton—created “Grateful Service.” Scheduled for Sunday, September 11 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., “Grateful Service” entails a special visit and speech by Fire in the Kitchen, free refreshments on the Museum’s front lawn, and recognition of all of our public servants.
We invite everyone to celebrate the outstanding work of our communities’ most dedicated members with us in an afternoon of special guests and activities! The more, the merrier in creating a collective “thank you” for the work that may, at times, go unnoticed; the work that not only strengthens the core of our communities, but helps to create the binding for a community itself.
So, as you consider how you will spend the National Day of Service and Remembrance, consider joining the folks at the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park or another state park near and dear to you. If you can’t attend one of the many events, please send a special “thank you” from us, Virginia State Parks, and AmeriCorps in the spirit of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
