Belle Isle State Park has a variety of canoe programs for August!
Some of the programs are nature-related. Grand Ole Osprey takes visitors within sight of the many osprey nests that surround the park. Ospreys often catch fish in front of visitors, who learn many fascinating facts about them. The trips are offered August 3 and August 13 at 9 a.m. Wild About Wetlands explores the wetlands and their importance and are offered August 6 and 31 at 9 a.m., and on August 14 at 1 p.m. The Full Moon Canoe Trip (August 12) and Full Moon Kayak Trip (August 13) at 7:30 p.m. are very popular.
Two history programs are offered. What a Waterman focuses on the crabbers, oystermen, and fishermen that make their living from the waterways. These trips take place on August 6, 17, and 24 at 9 a.m. Native Knowledge teaches visitors how the Moraughtacund Indians used the wetlands for food and household items, and about John Smith’s writings about them. At the end of the program, visitors can make and take home cordage similar to what the Moraughtacunds would have made. These trips are offered August 10 at 9 a.m., and on August 20 and 28 at 1 p.m.
All programs include life-jackets, paddles, boats and an experienced guide. All programs cost $5 per person, except for the Full Moon trips, which are $6 per person. Reservations are recommended by calling (804) 462-5030 as space is limited. Programs may be canceled or postponed due to storms or heat advisories; visitors without reservations may want to call the park to confirm programs.
