Drive in theaters got to be popular as the automobile became more common in the 1930s, and reached their heyday during the 50s and 60s. Drive ins were especially appealing for young families with small children, who could watch a movie together from the privacy of their own automobile. As difficult as it is to imagine, most homes in those days did not even have a color television!
During the 70s, the popularity of drive ins waned, around the same time those large multiplex theatres started to proliferate. Many drive ins closed during those years to make way for more modern developments. A few remain however, to carry on the tradition of movies under the stars. Recent years have seen a resurgence in this throw back to simpler times, and several drive in theaters are still in operation throughout Virginia. For a listing click here.
