This is what we’ve all been waiting for…High Bridge Trail State Park marked its official opening of High Bridge with a ceremonial ribbon cutting on Tuesday, June 26, 2012!
High Bridge Trail State Park celebrated the official opening of High Bridge
with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
High Bridge, a Virginia Historical Landmark, was the last piece of the puzzle to complete the 31 mile linear trail. The trail encompasses the counties of Prince Edward, Cumberland, and Nottoway and the towns of Burkeville, Farmville, Pamplin, Prospect and Rice.
Doug Domenech, Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources, was the keynote speaker during the ceremony and addressed the importance of the future positive economic impact to localities along the trail. Since the bridge opened this spring, park visitors have more than doubled from this time last year. Trail users are coming from near and far to enjoy biking, hiking, horseback riding, and nature programs along the trail.
After the ceremony visitors enjoyed a walk on the bridge.
On Tuesday, July 3, 2012 enjoy a rare opportunity to visit the park after the sun goes down and cross High Bridge in the moonlight. The park will be open between Rice and Farmville until 11 p.m. Fiddle and bluegrass guitar music will be performed by AmeriCorps volunteer Waverly Garner and park staff member Ken Cordle under the full moon on the bridge. There’s also an amazing view of mass twinkling of fireflies in the river bottom below.
On Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4, 2012 the park’s AmeriCorps volunteer, Waverly Garner will be at the bridge for historical interpretations. For more information, click here or contact the park at 434-315-0457 or by email.
