A Civil War 150 Legacy Project event will be held at the Karlan Mansion. The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and the Library of Virginia are partnering in the project to identify and locate original source materials in Virginia that are related to the Civil War and emancipation.
Materials may include letters, memoirs, pension materials, military passes, discharge papers, diaries, hand-drawn maps, and selected memorabilia and other Civil War era manuscripts. Of particular interest to the project are global and pacifist perspectives and the viewpoints of individual African Americans and women. Items must be owned by the individual presenting the materials for digitization.

Also, living history encampments representing both the Union and Confederate soldiers will be presented at the Karlan Mansion, along with several noted Civil War book authors who will sign copies of their work.
The third, and final component of the Commemoration, will be the appearance of Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by Boggs, and Jefferson Davis, portrayed by McGourty. These two opposing Civil War leaders will speak to the audience about their philosophy on war and enumerate reasons why the Civil War was fought. This format will consist of separate speaking times for each President, followed by a question and discussion segment and should prove to be unique, informative and enlightening.
